Private Forest Owner Characteristics Affect European Spruce Bark Beetle Management under an Extreme Weather Event and Host Tree Density

چکیده
In the last few decades, an increasing number and intensity of bark beetle outbreaks have plagued forests Europe North America. Bark management is directly related to forest owner characteristics, although this relationship not well understood. The purpose study was investigate influence characteristics on amount timing sanitary felling under different disturbance regimes quantities Norway spruce. We combined databases felling, for Slovenia from 2014 2018 analyzed in relation characteristics. found that winter were positively associated with distance owner’s residence parcel. Larger parcels more affected by beetles but did later cutting summer period as hypothesized. decreased property size, while probability effect depended ice storm size settlement, permanent address private owner, also Gender age important felling. Forest owners are factor effective management. This highlights ownership should be emphasized order fight event large-scale disturbances. Governments support who at greater risk less efficient managing outbreaks. Furthermore, landowner included when forecasting

Non-Host Volatile Blend Optimization for Forest Protection against the European Spruce Bark Beetle, Ips typographus
Conifer feeding bark beetles (Coleoptera, Curculionidae, Scolytinae) pose a serious economic threat to forest production. Volatiles released by non-host angiosperm plants (so called non-host volatiles, NHV) have been shown to reduce the risk of attack by many bark beetle species, including the European spruce bark beetle, Ips typographus. However, the most active blend for I. typographus, conta...
متن کاملComposition and Elevation of Spruce Forests Affect Susceptibility to Bark Beetle Attacks: Implications for Forest Management
The spruce bark beetle, Ips typographus (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae), is one of the most destructive insects infesting spruce forests in Europe. Data concerning infestations of I. typographus occurring over the last 19 years (1994–2012) on the Southern Alps were analyzed in seven spruce forest types: (1) pure spruce plantations; (2) pure spruce reforestations; (3) pure spruce mo...
متن کاملDiapause and overwintering of two spruce bark beetle species
Diapause, a strategy to endure unfavourable conditions (e.g. cold winters) is commonly found in ectothermic organisms and is characterized by an arrest of development and reproduction, a reduction of metabolic rate, and an increased resistance to adversity. Diapause, in addition to adaptations for surviving low winter temperatures, significantly influences phenology, voltinism and ultimately po...
متن کاملThresholds in the life cycle of the spruce bark beetle under climate change
Using a simple temperature-driven multistage threshold developmental model, we analyse the impact of climate change on the life cycle dynamics of the spruce bark beetle Ips typographus. The completion of a full reproductive second generation within a single year (bivoltinism) might increase the risk of devastating bark beetle outbreaks. A network of more than 300 climate stations, comprising ti...
متن کاملNegative Feedbacks on Bark Beetle Outbreaks: Widespread and Severe Spruce Beetle Infestation Restricts Subsequent Infestation
Understanding disturbance interactions and their ecological consequences remains a major challenge for research on the response of forests to a changing climate. When, where, and how one disturbance may alter the severity, extent, or occurrence probability of a subsequent disturbance is encapsulated by the concept of linked disturbances. Here, we evaluated 1) how climate and forest habitat vari...
